Happy New Year

I hope everyone enjoyed your holidays! It is definitely beginning to feel like winter. Please
remember to send your children with warm clothing (hats, gloves, scarves, etc).  Unless the
temperature gets dangerously cold, we do go outside for recess every day.  Children will also
need snow pants and boots if they want to play in the snow outside.

Here’s what’s going on at South this month:

ACCESS Testing
All of our English Language Learners will begin ACCESS testing this week.  This important test

reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Progress Reports

progress reports home this Friday, January 15.

Dine and Share

Wednesday, January 13
at Buona Beef at Mannheim and
Touhy in Rosemont.  When you dine at Buona Beef on Wednesday (all day) 15% of your total
purchase will go right back to South School.  You must show the flyer to get credit.  These will
be going home with students today, but I have also included a copy in this email for your
convenience.  Feel free to make copies and share with all of your friends and neighbors!

Power Play
The Des Plaines Park District is once again offering their Play60 after school program right here
at South.  This fun program, which focuses on things like physical fitness and working as a
team, is on Tuesdays from 3:305:30 beginning on January 19.  Registration forms went home
last week and should be turned in to the office.

They provide free services (health screenings, school and sports
physicals and immunizations) to students who do not have private insurance. They
will be here during the school day and parents do not need to be present.

Permission papers have gone home, please fill them out, sign and return to school
by November 19th.

From the PTO

A big thank you to all the room parents who helped make the Halloween class
parties fun and successful! Room parents will have another opportunity in
December with our winter class parties! Don’t forget that all school volunteers
(including Room Parents) must complete the District Volunteer Forms.  These are
available online or in the office.

Mark your calendars for our next Dine and Share at the Wendy’s on Lee and Oakton.

Good afternoon South Families,

Friday marks the midpoint of our first trimester. All students will be coming home with their fall MAP reports. These reports will show you how your child is performing in both Reading and in Math. Teachers use the information gathered from these assessments to set goals, monitor student progress, and ensure that they are differentiating their instruction to meet the needs of each and every child. If you have any questions or would like help reading the reports please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Spotlight on Learning

Many parents have expressed confusion about Common Core math. Here’s a great video that explains why so many states (including Illinois) have made the shift to Common Core and how this “new” math promotes critical thinking and problem solving.

A message from DPSO

El mensaje tambien sigue en español

Good afternoon South Families,

As I walk around the building I am truly amazed to see all the incredible things going on in classrooms.  Kids are engaged, excited, and ready for learning!  Our children are investigating problems in Science, researching about geography in Social Studies, experimenting with different instruments in music and so much more.

Spotlight on Learning

As a school we are really focusing on reading this year. As you know, the best way to improve reading is to read more!   We ask students at every grade to read at home and complete a reading log.  You can help by reading with your child or talking to him/her about what he or she is reading.

  • Ask them to retell the story
  • Have them describe the main character, the setting, or the main problem (conflict)
  • Ask them to point out new words they came across
  • Ask them how the story would be different if it took place in another time or location.
  • Have them show you specific examples from the story.

PTO Updates

The PTO is well under way and we are busy planning fun events!  Thanks to everyone who has supported the PTO and the school by becoming members, buying spirit wear and attending the picnic!  There is still time to become a member!  Your membership will help with the upcoming events at South School!

Our first big fundraiser is coming soon!  Be on the lookout for World’s Finest Chocolate!!  It is coming home soon!  Also, remember that all year long we collect Box Tops!  This is an easy way to raise funds for our school!  Just cut out and return to your teacher or office!  Thanks for all your support to our PTO!  We are off to another great year!!

Other Updates/Reminders:

  • Are you on Facebook? Be sure to follow South’s Facebook page for updates and pictures!
  • The South parent calendar is up on our district website (www.d62.org/south)
  • Want to join Power Play  at South?  It’s an after school program run by the Park District every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30-5:30. There are still a few spots available.  Stop in the office to pick up a form if you are interested.
  • Homework Club begins next Tuesday, September 22 from 8:30-9:00.

Thanks to those of you who completed the Parent Survey I sent out a couple of weeks ago. Here are some of the things I learned from your feedback:

-The vast majority of respondents said they feel comfortable going to me or a teacher with questions or concerns (yay!).
-People are actually reading my emails and seem to find them helpful. I will definitely continue to send these out.
-You are asking for more pictures on Facebook! I will work on doing this on a more regular basis.
-You are asking for more opportunities to meet other South families. We are working on putting a few things together for next year.
